Where Children Come First

About Us

Woodland Child Development Center, Inc. was born out of an expressed need for quality child care in the Hammond community. Members of the Neighborhood Action Council; a federal low-income housing project approached the Board of Trustees of the Woodmar Methodist Church with a desire to set up a day care center.

An ad-hoc committee was formed to explore the possibility. The body secured a one time federal grant through the Lake County Economic Opportunity Council and local contributions and set up the day care agency in a space offered for rent in the new addition of the Woodmar United Methodist Church. Staff was hired and the daycare center was opened on January 6, 1970.

Today, Woodland has grown and expanded not only in its physical location and space but the Center has experienced tremendous growth in its enrollment. When the Center opened in 1970, it was licensed for 30 children, now the center is licensed for 263. Woodland Child Development Center, Inc. is a NAEYC Accredited Child Care and Preschool Program. We are also a Level 4 Paths to Quality Provider which is a bragging right duly earned. Woodland is a private community non-for-profit child-learning program.

We address the whole child including but not limited to physical, social, emotional, cognitive and creative skills. For over 40 years Woodland has been providing quality child care and we are proud of the services we offer our children and families.

We utilize THE CREATIVE CURRICULUM. It is based on the theory that children learn through play. It incorporates learning through play, after all our most important clients LOVE to play. The curriculum allows for teaching staff to follow guidelines. It encourages creativity and "out the box" lesson plan designs and implementation. Through Creative Curriculum, our highly skilled caregivers are trained to help children become independent, responsible, confident and ready for success. They gain knowledge and skills such as language and literacy, initiative and social relations, movement, and music. Our curriculum has been researched, scientifically tested and with our highly skilled staff, we pride ourselves on providing quality care that garner AWESOME results.

The purpose of this Parent Handbook is to outline the policies and procedures under which we operate as licensed child care providers. Woodland Child Development Center has been designed to help children, as well as parents, bridge the sometimes-difficult gap between the security of home and school and to provide a community service for those in need of childcare services. We see each child as a unique and important person. Enrollment is limited to children ages 12 weeks to 12 years. We strive to help each child through every stage of development as they grow and learn as well as provide an environment that supports children with special needs and disabilities within the guidelines of Inclusive Child Care in Indiana. Woodland Child Development Center has an open door policy, but reserves the right to monitor anyone who visits the center. Please view in detail our Handbook for your safety and your child's.
